Block in-game ads with VipMod: which games it works on, and what it costs you

VipMod has two ways to get rid of ads in a game, and they work in different places. This guide is about the one that needs no mod: the Block ads switch that every game in VipMod has under Game tweaks, on every plan, Free included.

The switch cuts the game off from the ad networks

An ad in a game isn't part of the game. It gets downloaded from an ad network's servers right before it plays. Block ads stops that one game from reaching the ad networks, inside VipMod's own space, so your phone's Wi-Fi, your browser and every other app carry on as usual. When the game can't fetch an ad, it gives up after a few seconds, or straight away depending on the game, and moves on without it.

Because the switch works on the game's connections rather than on its code, it works on most games without anyone writing a mod for them, including games you've added from your own phone. The list only covers ad and tracking networks, never anything a game needs to run, like Google sign-in, cloud saves or the game's own servers.

The price is the rewarded videos

Plenty of games let you watch an ad for double gold, a revive or a free chest. With Block ads on, those videos can't load either, so the "watch to earn" button grays out or says no ad is available. The switch warns you about it in its own line: "rewarded videos won't load either". You get a clean screen and lose those rewards.

There's no way to block the ads you don't want and keep the ones you do, because the same networks serve both. If a reward matters, turn Block ads off, open the game, watch the ad, then turn the switch back on. Each flip closes the game if it's running and takes effect the next time it starts, so it's a detour worth making for a big reward, not for every small one.

The MOD menu way keeps the rewards

Games in the store that come with a mod often have an ad item in their MOD menu, under names like No ads or Ad rewards without watching. Most of these work inside the game itself: the game believes the ad has already played and pays out right away, so you keep the reward without watching anything. Hero Survival IO and Idle Zombie Wave both have one. A few only remove the forced ads between levels and leave reward videos playing as usual, and each game's page says which kind it has. When a game's MOD menu offers an ad item, use it instead of the Block ads switch.

For a game that isn't in the store, DIY Mod has Remove ads as one of its three quick picks, and it's the request that works on the most games.

One switch, then open the game again

  1. Long-press the game's tile in VipMod, open Game tweaks and turn on Block ads under Network.
  2. Open the game. There's nothing to reinstall, and if the game was running, VipMod has already closed it so the switch applies on this start.

When ads still get through

  • The game shows ads from its own publisher, usually for the studio's other games, and they come from the same servers as the game's data. Blocking those would cut the game off too. It's rare, but it happens.
  • The ad comes through Facebook. Facebook's ad network shares an address with Facebook login, and we'd rather let an ad through than lock you out of a game account you signed in to with Facebook.
  • The ad network is new to the list. Ad networks keep opening new addresses, so the honest promise is most ads, most of the time.
  • The game downloaded some ads and stored them before you flipped the switch. Those can still play once or twice before they run out.

For an offline game there's a more thorough option: turn off the Internet for that one game. With no connection at all there's nothing to download, ads included, and the game usually opens faster too.
