Force 90/120Hz in games stuck at 60fps, with VipMod, for that game only
Your phone has a 90 or 120 Hz screen and the game still looks like 60. Usually that's because the game asks for 60 Hz when it opens, and Android goes along with it. Every game in VipMod has a Highest refresh rate switch that changes that request to the fastest rate your screen offers at its current resolution, for that one game only.
One switch in VipMod, one setting on the phone
- Long-press the game's tile in VipMod, open Game tweaks and turn on Highest refresh rate under Performance & display.
- Make sure the phone itself allows more than 60 Hz. On a Samsung that's Settings, Display, Motion smoothness, set to Adaptive rather than Standard. Pixel phones call it Smooth Display and Xiaomi calls it Refresh rate. Battery saver modes often hold the screen at 60 Hz, so check that too.
- Open the game. VipMod closes it when you flip the switch, so the new request goes out on the next start.
Which games actually get smoother
The switch only changes the refresh rate the screen is allowed to run at. Whether the game looks smoother depends on whether it can draw more than 60 frames a second:
- Light 2D games, casual games and games with a 90 or 120 fps option that's hidden on your phone tend to draw at whatever rate the screen runs at, and they get visibly smoother.
- 3D games that cap themselves at 60 in their own graphics settings might change. After turning the switch on, look through the game's settings to see whether a higher frame rate option has appeared.
- Games that hard-code 60 fps, which many big studios do, won't change. The screen runs at 120 Hz, the game still draws 60 frames, and all you get is a battery that runs down faster.
One shooter we worked on stayed at 60 no matter what the screen allowed. Getting it to a real 120 took the 120 Hz request plus a fix written for that one game, and that second part was a mod made for it, not something the switch can do for every game.
See the number for yourself
On Android 11 and later, turn on Show refresh rate in Developer options (if you've never opened them, tap Build number seven times under About phone). The screen's current rate then sits in a corner while you play. If it reads 120 but the game doesn't look any smoother, the game itself is drawing 60 frames a second, and this switch can't change that.
When to leave it off
- On a mid-range phone, 120 Hz makes the processor and graphics chip work harder, so the phone heats up and the game starts dropping frames. If the game feels worse with the switch on, turn it off.
- When you're away from a charger and want to play for a long time.
- When the check above shows the game didn't change.
If your phone gets hot over long sessions, the Sustained performance switch right below can also help. It asks the phone for a steady speed instead of short bursts, which means fewer frame drops once it warms up, on phones that support it.
And if what you're after is the game itself running faster, game speed rather than frames, that's a job for a speed item in the MOD menu, like the battle speed options in Kingdom Rush and Idle Kingdom Defense, or for a DIY Mod request.
