Play Protect flags VipMod as unsafe: why it happens and how to get past it

You tap Install and Android throws up a box: "Blocked by Play Protect", "Unsafe app blocked" or "Play Protect doesn't recognize this app's developer". A lot of people stop right there and delete the file. Here's what that box is really telling you, and how to get past it.

That box doesn't mean a virus was found

Play Protect has two kinds of warnings, and they look a lot alike:

  • "Doesn't recognize this app's developer", "this app may be harmful" and similar wording mean the app wasn't published on Google Play, so Google has never seen it before. That's the one you get with VipMod, and with every app you download from anywhere other than Google Play.
  • "Harmful app blocked", naming a specific type of malware, is an actual scan result. VipMod never gets that one.

Newer versions of Android also block apps built for a very old version of Android, with no install button at all. We raised the Android version VipMod is built for, so it doesn't get caught by that rule. If the Install button is still grayed out for you, the file you're installing is almost certainly an old copy of VipMod, so download it again from the download page. If an older VipMod is already on your phone, install the new file over it rather than uninstalling first, because uninstalling deletes the games inside it.

Getting past it takes two taps

  1. In the box, tap More details. Some phones say "Learn more" instead, or show a small arrow that expands the box.
  2. Tap Install anyway (on some phones, "Install without scanning").

That's all. You don't need to turn Play Protect off for the whole phone, and we'd advise against it, because it still does a useful job checking your other apps.

Why VipMod isn't on Google Play

Google Play doesn't allow an app that runs other apps inside its own space and loads mods into them, and that is exactly what VipMod does. So VipMod will always be a file you download from this site, and the Play Protect box will show up the first time you install it. After that, VipMod updates itself from inside the app, so you'll rarely see the box again. If an update ever gets stopped by it, the same two taps work there too.

How to check the file is the real one

  • Download it only from this site's download page. Copies on other download sites aren't ours and may have been tampered with.
  • The real file is small, under 10 MB. A "VipMod" that weighs 50 or 100 MB isn't VipMod.
  • A copy advertised as "VIP unlocked" or "premium" isn't ours either. A plan belongs to your account, never to a file you download.

Will Play Protect remove VipMod later?

In our experience, no. Play Protect may send a notification once saying it found an app from an unknown developer, and after that it leaves the app alone. It doesn't uninstall something you chose to install. If VipMod ever vanishes from your phone, the usual cause is that someone, or a cleaner app, uninstalled it.
